The red mage is by far the most versatile class in the game. Often considered a jack of all trades, this type of mage can use white magic, black magic, and is an average melee character. With a bit more hit points and armor than a white mage or black mage, a red mage is going to survive longer in your party.
With the versatility of the red mage comes a lot of added fun to the game. It is even possible to substitute the recommended black mage and white mage combo for a single red mage which will give you an extra spot in your party for an added fighter or added black belt.
Just remember that this type of mage is not going to get the most powerful spells in the game. Almost all the high level spells that are really effective are given exclusively to either the white mage or black mage so will be unattainable by a red mage. But because the red mage can use both sides, it is usually rounded out. The red mage still gets some critical spells like the cure spells, buffs, and mid level damage spells which work well for most of the game until the very end. This makes the red mage an absolutely amazing class for the first 2/3rds of the game.
In terms of fighting, they do not get as much hit points or armor class as the rest of the melee classes. However, they will still get some decent damage out especially if you choose to give them the Masamune at the end of the game which is recommended for this class. They usually are not the best to put in the front of the party, but usually do very, very well in the 3rd or 4th slot. They also are average when taking the 2nd slot in your party so do not worry if you choose to put them there as well.
Although they can be a little bit worse than other classes at the end of the game, their versatility makes them incredibly fun. Also, because you have to buy them armor, weapons, and spells, they can become a little expensive. Even with their down sides, they are considered by many to be the most fun class in the entire game because you can just do so much with them. Although they are not in the traditional party, they make a great substitute for either the white mage, the black mage or in some cases both.
